Advertising on Facebook

November 12, 2008

Facebook was initially built for college and university students in 2004 and has since grown into a popular social networking website that is open to all. It has over 46 million members worldwide and is the 7th most visited site in the United States and sees over 15 billion pageviews every month. That’s why marketers are using Facebook for brand exposure, traffic and sales. This gives marketers and companies a viral and effective means of promoting their website to the Facebook audience.
Facebook quickly understood that with its success it has to take advantage of it by offering marketers to advertise on its website. It has created a special page for those who want to advertise or promote something. They can choose the kind of ads they want, the payment options, the schedules…

Internet a threat to luxury brands?

November 12, 2008

Marketers have been thinking hard about whether the Internet is compatible with luxury brands or not. According to Lew Frankfort, president of Coach, luxury brands should not be sold on the Internet: “We prefer our products to be sold in image-enhancing environments only.” However, consumers always want new products and sometimes want to get rid of old one. Consequently, the secondary market which is selling old products on the Internet could be a good way to sell it and at the same time make potential buyer take advantage of it. Indeed François Henri Pinault, Luxury goods group PPR’s chief executive believes that a secondary market can educate the consumer about the product. “It would be better to have used products at a good price than fakes,” he said. However, shops are not in danger of losing clientele as many consumers want what’s new, and a secondary market usually offers predominantly old lines.

Buzz Marketing

Buzz Marketing is another tool that companies use to promote their products or just to make people talk about it. It is creating a buzz around it and generates positive attitudes towards the product. Firms create something original in broadcasting a message as widely as possible, assuming that this is the best way to reach the largest possible number of interested consumers. The final objective is to create positive word of mouth.

Check the Wilkinson video advertisment I found on Daylimotion which shows a time when Babies had a great life. The softness of their skin got them all mom’s attention. Then one day, fathers discovered a special weapon, the new wilkinson Quattro.

The aim of this ad was to create a buzz and it seems like it worked. Indeed you can see the number of time this video has been viewed and also how many times it has been added in favourites in this website.

Consumer power ‘will affect email marketing’

November 12, 2008

Here is an article stating that consumers are getting more and more powerful on the Internet which is striking for the firms. Indeed, companies use email marketing to potential or current customers to make them buy something immediately or encourage customer loyalty. According to Habeas, an email reputation email agency, consumers act as “key driver” along with suppliers and investors in technological interactions. Firms need to create high-performing email marketing campaign as they are not willing to receive messages which do not target their interest. In other words, working with this agency permits to get higher performance, enhances relationship and creates brand reputation. Indeed, when we receive targeted and relevant messages that target our interest, we are more in a position to reply in a positive way.

Pop-up ad

October 14, 2008

I found a funny video on youtube. This is a joke about pop-up ads and pop-up blockers. Anyone who has used the Internet any time in the past year has been annoyed by pop-up advertisements which pop-up in their window at anytime when going to a page. I bet many of you wish to have a pop-up blocker like that!

But in fact, advertisers have thought carefully about web advertising. Indeed, the aim is to make web users start clicking on ads and visiting their sites more often.

In addition to this picture, the website computer.howstuffworks.com/web-advertising5.htm, have released an article about “How Web Advertising Works”, especially pop-up ads. It was written by Marshall Brain and according to him, pop-up ads are “more effective than banner ads. Whereas a banner ad might get two to five clicks per 1,000 impressions, a pop-up ad might average 30 clicks. Therefore, advertisers are willing to pay more for pop-up. Typically, a pop-up ad will pay the Web site four to 10 times more than a banner ad. That is why you see so many pop-up ads on the Web today.”

US Teens Spending Lesser on Online Purchases

September 24, 2008

Hi! here is an article dealing with American teenagers and online purchases. Although the Internet has made a huge change in consumer behaviours, teenagers participation remains limited as they still prefer to buy in real shops. The articles reports that 60% of them have bought something through the Internet at some point of time, spending roughly $46 a month in garnement and music. Moreover, it is said that the Internet has not become their only way for purchasing. Indeed, they still stick to the real shops so they can feel the products they are buying. They like the “sensory stimulation that accompanies shopping with friends at stores”. Despite these facts, the Internet make them become smarter shoppers having the possibilities to compare products, having loads of information about the products online, being prepared to what they will purchase at a certain price before going to the real shop or eventually purchasing through the Internet.

As for me, the Internet is very useful when I have to make a decision. I’m making more informed decisions for price comparison shopping. In addition, the number of sources of online information are numerous and I’m able to make the right decision and choose the right product in real shops or even on line.
